You Were Throwin' Pebbles

8:28 AM, eastern time. I just finished unpacking all of my things. The apartment is empty, all the lights were off, all of the electronics were unplugged, and since I was the last to leave, it's exactly the way I left it. When the plane landed in Boston, I looked out the window to see snow and some fat white guys, and that pretty much sums up Boston right there.

There is literally no food in my apartment. I don't know if I should just go to sleep and rest up a bit, or if I should watch more of the Today Show then just suck it up and go throughout my day. I have to deposit some checks, buy some groceries, then watch a bunch of TV and just prepare for school.

My winter break was ridiculously awesome. I got to hang out with everyone in SD, eating a ton of food, drinking copious amounts of alcohol, singing along to every guys iPod playlist including Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, and Lady Gaga, and admiring the San Diego weather. One thing I love about going home is everyone's always down to drink a shitload, get messed up, and have a good time. Follow that with some fatty Mexican food and seriously life doesn't get much better, and I'll miss it.

I have no idea when I'll be coming down next. I love being home, but when I'm there I seriously get no work done, so I guess it's a just balancing act that I'll have to figure out. So thanks for the good times everyone, till next time.

Sunday Morning

To: Ray, Adonis, Lance
From: Nazer

9:53 AM. Thinking about going to church, not too sure yet, the rain might get crazy. That's what bugs me about this city, well along with the weird accents and absurd liquor laws, the amount of rain I've seen in my time up here has been simply ridiculous. A couple weeks ago it was sunny as hell, then while walking home from class a storm comes and everyone, including me, gets owned by the wrath of nature; not exactly what I'd call a good afternoon.

Going out to buy groceries or pick up a six pack involves a complicated string of thoughts: what kind of sweater/jacket do I have to put on, will my umbrella be able to take this, is it cool to walk around with these shoes in those puddles, etc. It's tedious, but it's necessary, unless you're down to get wrecked by weather.

Besides all that, school is awesome. Classes are pretty challenging, which is good, and it's nice to talk about music, in a college, snobbish, geeky way, once again. My roommates are chill, but I gotta loosen these guys up a bit, they're not quite on that singing Green Day on the karaoke machine while spending hundreds of dollars on Soju level yet, but in time we'll get there.

I've been watching a ton of TV and that keeps me pretty busy. Tonight alone we have Mad Men, the season premiere of Dexter, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, True Blood, Entourage, The FOX comedies, and I didn't even include football, so I have no idea what I'm going to do about that tonight, but we'll see. This new Ne-Yo cd isn't very good at all, kind of disappointed but whatever, and the Rock Band 2 setlist is fun as hell to play.

One month in, and I guess I can say that I'm comfortable. I'm keeping up on all my school work while simultaneously juggling many hours of TV, with movies and video games, while still enjoying myself. I've been cooking a lot too, which is fantastic because I can spend 5 bucks on a steak and have that last me 3 meals, same thing with a pack of chicken breasts. Me and my asian roommate are planning to take a trip to chinatown so I can pick up some lumpia wrapper so all these fools can eat it all, but once again we'll see. Maybe more next week, what's going down with you guys?

(Yeah I'll post when I feel like it)

Halfway Done With College...

It's 1:20 PM. My bags are packed, my room is cleared, and in about an hour I'll be calling a cab to take me to Logan airport for my flight home. After a week of rain, the sun is shining again, and I hate to say it, but I think I'm really gonna miss this place.

When celebrating the end of the school year last night everyone was talking about how excited they were to go home. it didn't really hit me till then that I spend the majority of my year in Massachusetts, and the holidays and the summer in California. Today I ran some last minute errands, but while walking through the city streets I really took the time to take it all in, and even though I give this place so much shit (for not having good food and no 24hr spots), I really do enjoy myself when I'm up here.

Another school year gone, with another four month summer. People always say that college is about finding yourself, and this year that realization really shined through. After learning so much more about music than I thought I'd ever know, I'm much more determined to live successfully doing the things I love: playing piano, composing for full orchestra, producing, electronic music, and so on. For Berklee kids the summer is really about taking in everything you learned throughout the hectic school year and really soaking it in, making sure you understand the information presented. This summer I plan to really hone my skills in all of these areas, as well as collaborate with my friends through the internet, trading songs back and forth, etc.

I could go on and on about all of this, but truth be told I just want to relax for this next hour, head to the airport, order a cocktail on the plane just 'cuz I can, and then hangout till I'm back in San Diego. Till next time.

An Observation: Intoxicated Philosophy

To: Ray, Lance, Adonis
From: Nazer

Another Friday night goes by. Another amount of cash spent on liquor and juice, another pizza purchased, another night of getting drunk, or shit faced, or faded, basically another fun time. But when drinks start flowing, composure begins to disappear just as fast as the bottle, and you all of a sudden you're no longer in your conscious state of mind, but a different one; one more open, one more "free," and so on. Don't get me wrong I'm not a crazy hippie (for the most part), but I'm sure most can agree when I say that a cup full of liquor eventually leads to this altered reality. Bars start to bend, lines are crossed, and maybe, just maybe, with enough people sharing your same embodiment, you enter the world of deep conversation.

Intoxicated Philosophy, at this point, anything goes. Conversations of love, loss, the future, the past, the now, and all of a sudden you start to see different perspectives, different layers of individuals that were previously concealed. Lately, at a music school where everyone is worried about the digital world in which record companies collapse, plastic CDs become obsolete, and people become too attached to their screens to even care, let alone go out and pay for live music, it's been interesting to hear what everyone around me here has had to say. In an industry where everyone is so busy working on their image, thinking through every syllable making sure they don't say something that could cause them any real controversy, it's fascinating to hear the things that people have to say. I can only imagine what the conversations would be like in a room full of layers, who knows.

I had a conversation with one of my friends here about this topic. Is it safe to take the things said when under the influence of alcohol seriously, or should we simply disregard the entire night and forget whatever happened? Are the things you say when your drunk things that you've been holding inside forever, or are they simply developed and spit out due to being belligerent? We'll really never know, but regardless, moments like these are always enjoyable. Things get said, some hilarious, leaving our heads exploding with laughter, some so deep and thought provoking that silence simply takes over the room and everyone looks like an angel just flew through them. Really, anything goes.

In the end, it's just something to think about. Till next time.

Taking It Easy

To: Lance, Ray, Adonis
From: Nazer

12:33 on a Saturday afternoon. The sun is shining outside and it looks ridiculously nice, but I know when I step out it's going to be windy as hell. On my desk are leftover Heineken bottles and Mcdonalds napkins, crumpled receipts and magazine advertisements, and more, lets just call it unorganized chaos.

School has been cool, well let me say this again, school is always cool, just some weeks are better than others. I don't think I'm alone in this, but eventually you hit a point in your studies where you feel like you're comfortable with the material, then you read a few more pages of a book and your world suddenly expands and you realize how much you actually don't know; a vicious, repetitive cycle. With only 3 more weeks left and finals I'm just going to stick it out and hope for the best results.

I watched the Padres lose to the Giants, watched "Psycho" (1960) for my History of Film Music class, watched The Office and 30 Rock, and played Portal and Mass Effect on 360. The last page of Entertainment Weekly was entitled Videogame Lunacy by Stephen King, and he talked about the generalizations given to video games as a sort of "evil" in the world. He makes note to say that he isn't a gamer, but he understands when people in this industry lash out because of the comments that are directly associated with them. He talked about a Massachusetts law that's currently in review stating that kids won't be able to purchase Mature rated games until they're 18, but states that the same child can go watch Hostel II at age 17. He also commented on the fact that it is so easy for a reporter to say that video games cause things like school shootings, but what ignorant adult let their kids get their hands on guns in the first place. This is a topic I find interesting because I consider myself a gamer, and I'm not in favor of the stereotypes placed behind them.

So what's planned for the day? Maybe some practicing, getting some school work done, maybe playing some video games or watching a movie, and then another night of hanging out, typical saturday, but we'll see. Take it easy folks.

It's Saturday, What's New

To: Ray, Lance, Adonis, and affiliates
From: Nazer
Re: Single Poison

That was an awesome piece. All of this is a subject that I don't comment very much on, and after reading Ray's post as well as Mel's and Kristine's I thought, why don't I comment on stuff like this? There are a ton of reasons why I shy away from this subject, but the most concrete would be that I'm the kind of person who bases a lot of things on fact. The simple truth is that the subject of dating and relationships really have no simple truths. There are no laws set in stone, there is no step by step guide to get you to where you wanna be, but there are a ton of shoots and ladders, and as we all know you can't predict when you'll reach an end. You can't explain attraction, you can't define love, and as cliche as this sounds, it really is a roller coaster with so many ups and downs, and that's what makes it all so scary, but so exciting and cool at the same time. I'll probably go more in depth in a future post down the line, so if you really wanna know more about my point of view feel free to ask or just stay tuned.

In other news, being 21 is expensive as hell. Money once saved for games or books or cds now goes to beer for beer pong and expensive ass drinks at restaurants. Don't get me wrong it's all extremely enjoyable and there's always good stories, but watching my bank account rapidly deplete isn't that tight.

Baseball season has officially begun, and the natives of Boston do their team proud by rocking Red Sox gear literally EVERYWHERE. I subscribed to the video stream on MLB.com so I can watch Padres games, and having the Channel 4 SD commentary really makes me feel like I'm at home, go Padres!

I'm really excited for the Spring TV season to start up. I can't wait to sit my ass down in front of the television for hours lazily watching 30 Rock and The Office. In the meantime I've been watching AMCs Breaking Bad, a show about a man with a wife and child who teaches chemistry at a high school. He becomes diagnosed with lung cancer and his life is quickly spiraling downward with financial problems and stress, so he decides to make cook meth and sell it to get by. I'm only a couple episodes in but it's been pretty entertaining so far.

I'll be spending the rest of my day planning out my schedule for next semester, maybe playing some video games, deciding on dinner, some practicing, then another night of random acts. Time is flying by and I'll be home in a month, till next time.

Happy Easter!

To: Adonis, Nazer, Ray

Re:
Well For Me...

This was the most disastrous season of Lent ever. I didn't give anything up, I ate meat every Friday, and then topped it off with a end-of-finals-slash-celebrate-Alexand's-birthday BASH that happened to take place on Good Friday, a day of somber remembrance. Oh yeah, and I won't be going to church today.

On that note, here's a great take on the Easter holiday from Rex Navarette, and how this special Sunday lost its original meaning somewhere down the line.

Finals make me homesick :'(

To: the extraordinary Ray, Adonis, Nazer
From: Lance

Kotaku's weekend editor, Maggie Greene, a grad student at Adonis' own UCSD, used her Weekend Note to whine about finals so I will too.

I'm horribly behind on an SQL Database project, and a 10 page research paper due tomorrow, but I would like to waste a few minutes to share some final exam bloopers! Most of these have made their way around the internet many times already, but this shit is still funny.

It's Saturday, It's Raining, What's New?

To: Lance Ray Adonis
From: Nazer

So it's been sunny all week here in downtown Boston. Everyone seemed a bit happier, clerks in stores were nicer, there wasn't any need for giant wind breakers and so on. Until today, when I woke up to the sounds of rain dripping on the railings of the fire escape, but what else is new?

Today one of the most anticipated games ever is coming out, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. For those of you who play, get ready for a ton of additional characters, new stages, new strategies to find, and honestly just more hours used beating the shit out of each other with our favorite childhood video game characters. For those of you who don't play, sorry, get ready to watch a bunch of dudes staring at a screen, the sound of clicking controllers, and a bunch of screaming for no reason.

My spring break starts March 15th, and this week I have midterms. I purposely did all my schoolwork needed so I could dedicate more time into certain things (read one paragraph up), but I should be straight for all my tests. I seriously can't wait to go home though. Even if nothing huge occurs, it'll just be nice to relax and not have to think about chord progressions and scales for a week. Plus I'll get to see my family and eat a bunch of good food since I'll be home for Easter.

Lately my snack food of choice has been Kettle Chips, of the yogurt and green onion variety. I know, instantly you think "wtf yogurt?!!?," but it adds a creamy taste to it, making it a light and refreshing potato chip, much better than shitty sour cream and onion Lays. The other flavors of Kettle chips are bomb too.

I don't know how many people here read magazines, but I have a weekly subscription of Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide that I didn't pay for, and I must say that Entertainment Weekly beats the shit out of TV Guide. The writing is better in my opinion, and they have coverage on music books and dvds as well as tv and movies. Don't get me wrong, I love listening to the TV Guide podcast as well as reading their online stories, but their magazine is just full of TV listings that I could find somewhere else.

Speaking of TV, NBCs Friday Night Lights is currently cutting deals to get renewed for a third season, so I finally started to watch it. I'm halfway into season 1, and I must say it's pretty entertaining. Check it out if you have the free time.

So that's pretty much it for now. I wanna find something incredibly unhealthy to eat, and then I'll be at Gamestop at midnight to pick up my copy of Brawl. PEACE!

"Tailwind Turner" no longer a Charger, plus some Weekend Notes

To: Nazer
From: Lance
Re: And Then He Was Like, And Then She Was Like...

It's about 6:15 PM and my PS3 has been on for 16 hours straight. There was an ongoing rotation of Jordan, Tuan and JR on Call of Duty 4 since 2 in the morning. If it wasn't for a couple rounds of King's Cup and Smoke or Fire last night, the total hour count could have gone well over 24.

Weekend Notes:

- Unrestricted free agent running back, Michael Turner, signed with the Falcons today for a 6 year deal. There was no way we would've been able to hold on the Burner (ok, I admit that's his real nickname, it's not Tailwind) as a backup for LT, but I certainly wish him luck and will keep an eye on his career away from the Chargers. Also, I'm looking forward to a full feature over at Walking Contradiction with analysis of all the latest moves that went down since NFL Free Agency started.

- /start sexist rant I'm watching the Nuggets-Rockets game on ESPN right now and a woman is doing the color commentary. She seems to be doing a good job, making quality contributions to the guy who's doing the play-by-play, but this is honestly throwing me off. Every time I glance at my computer screen to work on this entry, I think there's ice skating going on in the background. /end blatant sexism

Finally...

-I plan on going to a Jay-Z concert in April because it's gonna be at a venue in IRVINE of all places. If you didn't know, he's my favorite rapper, and this is something I can't miss. Hit me up if you wanna go, I'm buying $80 tickets within the next day or two, and it looks like the tentative list includes Adonis and Alexand.
